School Enrollment Information 

We are delighted you are interested in enrolling your child at our school!  The following application and information is the responsibility of parent/guardians prior to enrollment.  New/Transfer students will be enrolled when all information is provided and a background check is completed.  Any residential enrollments must have prior approval before enrolling at the residential.

The following are required documents:

  • Certificate of Indian Blood (CIB)
  • Official Birth Certificate
  • Up-to-date Immunization Record
  • Guardian Documentation (if applicable)
  • Social Security Card (for High School)
  • Proof of Physical Address (for High School)

 Additional documents:

  • Withdrawal from previous school
  • Official Transcripts (High School)
  • Copy of Promotion Certificate (Incoming Freshman)
  • Exceptional Educational Services Documents (IEP) (if applicable) 

The Navajo Tribal Attendance law states that Navajo children between the ages of five (5) and nineteen (19) that are not graduated from high school must be attending school. Students who are dropped because of excessive absences will be referred to Family Court of the Navajo Nation. (Tribal Code Title 10, Chapter. Section 118, Paragraph A.)

Arizona Revised Statutes 15-184 states, “…school may refuse to admit any pupil who has been expelled from another educational institution or who is in the process of being expelled from another educational institution.” 

High School

Shonto Preparatory Technology High School accepts enrollment application packets for students fifteen (15) through eighteen (18) years of age. While students may apply for admission at any time of year, students are encouraged to submit their application packet on or before May 1st for the following school year. Initial admissions and if necessary, a lottery, shall be conducted at that time to determine enrollment for the following school year based on applications received by May 1st.

Applications will be accepted after the May 1st deadline before or during the school year for any remaining openings available.

Arizona Revised Statutes §15-184(B) provides that enrollment preference shall be granted to pupils returning to the charter school and to siblings of pupils already enrolled. A.R.S. §15-184(C) states that enrollment preference may be granted by the School to students who are in foster care, homeless, or those who are children, grandchildren or legal wards of employees of the school, Governing Board members, or employees, directors, officers, partners or Board members of the charter holder.

If capacity at the School is insufficient to enroll all those who submit an application on or before May 1st, the School shall select pupils through a lottery except that preference shall be given to siblings of pupils selected.

Shonto Preparatory Technology High School does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, color, religion, sex, or disability and operates its educational programs in compliance with all applicable law.

Pre-K - 8th Grade

 Enrollment will be open the first 2 weeks of each semester. Enrollment is pending until background checks are completed.

Shonto Preparatory Schools accepts enrollment application packets for students who range in age from five (5) years old through fourteen (14) years old. Student must be five (5) years old by December 31 st of the current school year to be eligible for enrollment.  Attendance, behavior, and academic checks will be completed for students who wish to attend SPS.

The following criteria will be considered for enrollment:

  • A 2.0 GPA is preferred, however enrollment will be considered on an individual basis.

  • Parent/guardian must provide all required documents (birth certificate, certificate of Indian blood, and other legal document, etc.)

  • Student must be in good academic standing with previous school. If student has been expelled, suspended, or has a behavior contract on file he or she may not be accepted and it is based on an individual case by case basis.

  • Student must not have a criminal history or criminal charges pending. Enrollment will be open the first 2 weeks of each semester. Enrollment is pending until background checks are completed.

  • Students with attendance issues will be considered if they enroll in the dorm.

Should a student withdraw, they may not re-enroll for the remainder of the school year. Consideration will be given for those cases in which there are issues that are beyond the family’s control. 

Immunization

Parents of children without complete immunization records will be allowed to pick up registration materials, but will not be able to officially register their child until all immunizations are complete.

Immunizations Required

  • DTP, DT, DtaP, Td (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) - 5 doses required
  • IPV, OPV (Polio) - 4 doses required
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) - 2 doses required
  • Hep B (Hepatitis B) - 3 doses required
  • HIB (Haemophilus Influenzae Type B) - 4 doses required

Students are accepted year round. Students must first enroll and be accepted at one of the schools before considered eligible to enroll in the Residential Program.
