 MEDIA RELEASE

Our Youth, Our Future Survey To Be Conducted at

Shonto Preparatory Technology High School

On February 19th, students in 9th – 12th grades will begin participating in the Our Youth, Our Future survey in cooperation with the Tri-Ethnic Center for Prevention Research at Colorado State University.  The funding for the administration of the survey comes from a federal grant awarded to the Tri-Ethnic Center, which allows the survey to be conducted at no cost to the school.  Participation in this survey is voluntary.  Parents who wish to withdraw their child from participating may do so by contacting Stacie Tsingine, Student Services Technician, at 928-672-3516.  In addition, a copy of the survey is available at the school for parents who would like to review it. Shonto Preparatory Technology High School believes that students’ participation in this survey will assist the school in planning, funding and evaluating drug and alcohol prevention programs.

Shonto is part of the Navajo Indian Reservation in the northeast corner of Arizona. Located about 20 miles from the Utah/Arizona border, many community members still live in homes with no access to running water or electricity. Most homes are only accessible by dirt roads because of the remoteness of the Shonto Chapter community.

Shonto Preparatory Technology High School was established in 1998 by local visionaries and educators to develop a local secondary institution readily accessible to rural communities, to eliminate prolonged commutes for students, encourage parental involvement and introduce a challenging curriculum to empower local students.

Shonto Preparatory Technology High School accepts enrollment application packets for students fifteen (15) through eighteen (18) years of age. Shonto Preparatory Technology High School does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, color, religion, sex, or disability and operates its educational programs in compliance with all applicable law. There are no tuition fees for attending SPTHS. Our school is a small and innovative charter with goals of becoming the premier public high school in this region of the state.
